Main Presentation: The GIMP Revisited

opening points

  • current unstable version of GIMP: 1.3.6
  • Stacey: "users with versions older than 1.2.0 are to be pitied"
  • Stacey currently using Wacom Graphire tablet with SuSE 8.0 & GIMP unstable
  • CMYK decomposition shown, accompanied by brief discussion
    on technical details of printing using the GIMP
  • it's of interest to note that PhotoShop didn't have a colour
    management system prior to v5, and that the importance of
    colour management cannot be overstated
  • GIMP introduced the ability to open PSD files (writing ability in the
    12.26.2000 stable release for Windows) and recently the ability
    to open layers
  • no spot colours available in GIMP (as opposed to PhotoShop)
  • see www.linux-usb.org for info on cameras and scanners that will work with Linux

functional examples

  • GQView demonstrated as used for making a slideshow using GIMP images
  • CodeWeavers Crossover Office is demonstrated running PhotoShop 7
  • Stacey describes the "zone system"
    zone numbers: 0 I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X
    -these describe:
    0 - absolute black
    1 - darkest shadows, no detail
    2 - dark shadows, beginning of detail

    .
    8 - bright white, beginnings of detail
    9 - brightest white, no detail
    10 - specular reflections of light sources
  • hue and saturation adjustments in the zones of a demo pic are demonstrated
  • animation demonstrated using gif and items in the animation section
  • another animation demo as an avi shown as well
  • GIMP allows creation of an animation using a directory of images:
    1. open first frame
    2. open remaining frames in the GIMP "VCR navigator"
  • scanning using Xsane and an Epson GT-9700 usb scanner discussed
    • the "Mr. Kennedy" image is colourized as an example of work done on
      scanned photographs
  • Kodak makes a gray and colour reference card for
  • supporting programs:
    • GQView
    • POV
    • Moonlight Creator
    • Blender (doesn't do raytracing)
    • ImageMagick
  • TigerT (Gnome icon and GIMP splash screen guru) has a good site
  • colour calibration shown using a 26/26/26 RGB rectangle on 0/0/0
    background, set monitor so that the inner rectangle is barely visible.
  • note that the Stacey has been giving classes at BB&C in the
    use of Photoshop
