Newbie Minute: no newbie minute this month

Main Presentation: Win4Lin by Andrew Willard

    Workstation Edition software overview:

Go to netraverse for more info.
    • still requires the complete install of windoze
    • "most" applications run out of the box
    • recovers and boots quickly
    requirements addressed, of interest
    • 2.4.x kernel
    • full install media for Windoze 95/98/ME (companion/rescue/upgrade CDs do not work)
      or MS-DOS if preferred
    • networking - works from within Linux (same IP) or as it's own networked host on
      your existing subnet
    • kernel-patching may have issues, so using their customized kernel may be the only
choice for some users (pick the one for your distro)
    • DirectX and "DirectWrite" do not work, so no games or graphics
    • NO USB support
    • "Brain Dead" easy setup for new users
Andrew gives it "one thumb up"

    installation:
    • "slick" install
    • checks for network, and if found checks for newer installer, and if found installs that and restarts the installation seamlessly
    • automatically pollutes desktop with icons in Gnome or KDE
    • Win4Lin Setup window allows detailed config of devices/resources and/or assignments
    • two installs; system-wide and personal session installs
(system wide must be done by root)
Windows Free Zone banners distributed by Andrew at end of presentation

    Book Raffle

    1. OpenSSL
      O'Reilly and Associates
      - Won by unknown attendee

Meeting Adjourned  to (mostly) Boston Pizza.
