Monthly General Meeting:
Emacs, More than a Text Editor

PRESENTATION:

EMACS created by Richard Stallman. The name `Emacs' was originally chosen as an abbreviation of *Editor MACroS*. Emacs is an extensible, customizable, self documenting, real-time display editor. It is context sensitive, multiplatform, and extensible thru Emacs LISP language.

  • Emacs was one of the first editers and is widely distributed.
  • It is much more than a Text Editor. It can be used as an IDE, or Integrated Development Environment.
  • Pico, Vi, and Emacs are all worth becoming familiar with, since you never know what you'll find on any given machine.
  • Emacs has an integrated Email function within it which handles inline attachments.
  • Is multiframed, allows infinite undo.
  • Well suited to Programming. Compilation and debugging supported from within the editor. Integrates well with CVS & RCS.
  • Supports Latex, remote editing, text based web browsing with cut and paste, searching, and incremental search: view source, dictionary, calender, directory editor, shell with completion, history, etc.
  • You can also play and control your MP3's from within Emacs.
