NEWS
- GKernal 2.4.19 released.
- Open Office 1.01.
- Blender fund raising project is going
well.
- SourceForge is now an IBM backed project.
- Sun Linux 5 is on offer.
- Mentioned LOLL- Loads of Linux Links. Currently hosted on Source Forge. New link submissions are invited.
- VLUG T-shirts are availabie at half price for $10.00.
- Book Raffle was held for 'Vi Improved'
by New Riders, won by VLUG member Ken Murray.
- Ken's Book Report will be ready *Real Soon Now!* ( we shall count the days ;-)
- Also raffled was ' Mastering Red Hat Linux 7.1' by Sybex.
Monthly General Meeting: Vi Text Editor
PRESENTATION:
Vi was one of the first editors and is widely distributed. Primarily a command line text editor.
- Used commonly for program editing.
- Also GUI version as Vim, for Vi Improved. Currently ver. 6.1.
- Also available as VIM for Windows.
- Offers ability to setup Vim configuration file to customize its look & feel.
- Macros & key commands provide even more speed & flexability.
- Horizontal screen splitting allows you to work on multiple files at once
- Locking files function allows only 1 person at a time to edit any given file.
- VIM also allows directory browsing to see and open files.
Discussion and Q&A took up the rest of the meeting.
