Announcements

  • Gentoo 1.2 distribution released.
  • Gnome 2.0 released. Wait a bit.
  • Latest version of LOLL is released on SourceForge.
  • Blender may be released as Open Source.
  • VLUG will be holding Raffles at future meetings for a variety of books, to help raise funds for the club.

Monthly General Meeting:
Linux on Exotic Hardware

Steve Shack presented re: SUN, Alpha, SGI, HP, Embedded console systems.
Points addressed included:

  • Mips based workstations.
  • Pocket pcs - Arm based handhelds.
  • Embedded systems.
  • Consoles.
  • Servers- HP Superdome, Sun e10k.

Why Use Exotic Hardware

  • Customization.
  • Platform stability: eg radiation, dust, vibration.
  • Cost.
  • Features - Capabilities.
  • Performance.
  • Hot swap cpu & ram.
  • Application support eg Smoke video.
  • editing support.

DOWNSIDE to Exotic:

  • Cost.
  • Vendor lock-in.
  • Technical competence required.

PORTS:

  • hppa - good.
  • sgi - inconsistent.
  • sun - excellant.
  • powerpc - Apple excellant.
  • ipaq - pocketpc excellant.
  • xbox not yet , soon.
  • gamecube - just starting.
  • ps2 - Linux Kits sold Retail!
