Announcements
- Gentoo 1.2 distribution released.
- Gnome 2.0 released. Wait a bit.
- Latest version of LOLL is released
on SourceForge.
- Blender may be released as Open Source.
- VLUG will be holding Raffles at future meetings for a variety of books, to help raise funds for the club.
Monthly General Meeting:

Steve Shack presented re: SUN, Alpha, SGI, HP,
Embedded console systems.
Points addressed included:
- Mips based workstations.
- Pocket pcs - Arm based handhelds.
- Embedded systems.
- Consoles.
- Servers- HP Superdome, Sun e10k.
Why Use Exotic Hardware
- Customization.
- Platform stability: eg radiation, dust, vibration.
- Cost.
- Features - Capabilities.
- Performance.
- Hot swap cpu & ram.
- Application support eg Smoke video.
- editing support.
DOWNSIDE to Exotic:
- Cost.
- Vendor lock-in.
- Technical competence required.
PORTS:
- hppa - good.
- sgi - inconsistent.
- sun - excellant.
- powerpc - Apple excellant.
- ipaq - pocketpc excellant.
- xbox not yet , soon.
- gamecube - just starting.
- ps2 - Linux Kits sold Retail!
