Announcements

Carl Constantine welcomed one and all to the September meeting of the Victoria Linux Users Group, and introduced Andrew Willard, who gave his usual commercial moment, advertising VLUG memberships and T-shirts for $20 each and Linux CD-ROMs for $10. He also announced that Stormix had given us a large number of their latest release, and others had donated the "Linux Starter Kit" and stuff from Oracle, including a pass to the IDevelop conference valued at US$800. These things would be given out during the quiz/draw segment of the evening. Mark McLaughlin announced that WEAV would be raffling a similar pass at their upcoming meeting; info on their Web site at www.weav.bc.ca.

Randy Esdon spoke about the benefits of VLUG membership, including discounts for members at computer stores around town. Barbara Irwin announced a bunch of new Linux books at the public library and asked for suggestions on new ones they should get. Matthew Skala did a count of attendees.

Carl announced that the Computer Show was coming up, on the 4th and 5th of November, at Pearkes Arena, and that the club's Annual General Meeting would take place at our upcoming October meeting. Then he gave some of the recent news:

  • Kernel 2.2.72 released
  • Qt GPLed, which means from now on we can concentrate on features instead of license issues when comparing it to GNOME.
  • Cowpland resigned from Corel, which should have interesting consequences
  • Software releases, including perl 5.7 pre-release and Mandrake 7.2 in beta
  • Alan Irwin noted that with Qt GPLed, KDE is now in Debian
  • StarOffice 6 will be GPLed, next month

Quiz and Raffle

Art, Carl, and others conducted a quiz, with the free stuff announced earlier given to those with correct answers. We also held the draw for the Oracle pass, won by Mark McLaughlin. There followed a short "general Q&A" session, which focused mostly on KDE and SSH/OpenSSH issues.

Adjourned

For the usual refreshments at Boston Pizza.
