Announcements

Carl "Captain Meeting" Constantine welcomed everyone everyone to the August VLUG meeting and immediate introduced Andrew "El Presidente" Willard, who did his usual commercial moment, announcing VLUG memberships available at $20/year (only 6 cents a day!), T-shirts in all sizes except large for $20 each, and Linux CD-ROMs for $10 each. Next, Matthew "Sadly Inaccurate" Skala did a count of how many people had attended, results above.

Les Benson spoke thanking Matthew on behalf of BB&C, Victoria's PC user group, for having taught their Perl course, and announced that the notes from the course were available free online for anyone who wanted to get the book and study it independently. (The URL he announced seems to be no longer active, but the notes are still at https://bbs.bbc.org/~mskala/perl/).

Carl announced some news items of interest:

  • Sir Alec Guinness, noted for Obi-Wan Kenobi and other roles, passed on and will be missed.
  • The Napster suit continues to progress; as of this meeting it was "in a holding pattern until it gets to the appeals court".
  • Caldera has bought part of SCO.
  • Lots of kernel changes coming for 2.5
  • Debian 2.2 due for final release this week
  • Alan Irwin contributed that Mozilla M17 and Netscape preview 2 were released, at the same time.
  • Sun has announce they'll be open-sourcing StarOffice 6.

A short discussion ensued on Framemaker and other technical writing environments. Then Carl introduced Stacey Falconer with a brief biography.

Quiz

After Stacey finished answering audience questions, Carl and Andrew turned the tables by asking the audience questions about GIMP and other topics and awarding free stuff for correct or amusing answers.

Immediately before the end of the meeting, the team announced that the next Installfest would be held in the David Strong Building at UVic (formerly the 1996 Classroom Building) on August 20th, and we hoped to see more people signing up for it than last time.

Adjourned

To Boston Pizza for beer, pizza, etc.
