Announcements

The start of the meeting was somewhat disrupted because, in a room full of techies, nobody could get the light switches to work. We eventually gave up and moved to the next room down the hall, where Carl B. Constantine opened the meeting at about 7:10. He introduced Matthew Skala, who counted attendees for the "sadly inaccurate attendance figures" section of the minutes. Then Carl gave some recent news items:

  • El Presidente has returned from Japan, Korea, and China! (And there was much rejoicing.)
  • We now have access to the network port in our meeting room, so we can do some cooler presentations featureing network stuff.
  • The next Installfest will be Sunday, August 6, in the David Strong (formerly 1996 Classroom) building at UVic, room 113. Please, somebody show up this time.
  • Microsoft has entered into an OEM deal with VMware; they have not (as formerly reported) bought them out. Although this has raised some eyebrows in the community, it shouldn't really be a surprise - after all, one of the main uses of VMware's product is to be able to run MS's product within a Real Operating System.
  • Good news for overclokers - the Duron chip will be overclockable.
  • Barbara Irwin announced more new Linux books at the public library.
  • MySQL is now GPLed, "so we can argue", as Carl said, "about features instead of licensing".

Chris Halsall took a moment to attempt distributing more membership cards to people who didn't have them yet.

Presentation

Carl B. Constantine, on XFree 4 and Xinerama.

Further Presentation

Carl finished his presentation and passed the baton to Chris Halsall, who attempted to demonstrate OpenGL programming but was hindered by technical problems. When that seemed to be a non-starter, Chris gave a short talk and answered questions on OpenGL and the new Direct Rendering Interface.

Adjourned

To Boston Pizza, for the usual refreshments.
