Announcements
Chris Halsall presented a number of interesting new stories which are
mostly old news at this point. Important points not to have missed are
(1) slashdot.org has been sold to andover.net, giving Rob and the nice
/. folks a bit of cash to pay the rent with; (2) the Apple Quick Time
server is going to be or has been ported to Linux.
Andrew Willard made his usual VLUG sales presentation. We have lots of
new CDs - contact him at linux1@home.com for more info. We need to
receive three (3) more orders for the extra large Tuxen to get the
discount - even more orders may result in an even larger discount. VLUG
T-shirts (note: not polo shirts) are on their way!
Presentation
Mike Thorpe made a great and detailed presentation on IP Chains and
Packet Management. Personally I learned a lot - thanks Mike!

Q&A
We had a general question period and the following were discussed in
varying detail:
- What can create Acrobat .pdf files in Linux? xpdf and ghostscript.
(xpdf possibly only reads .pdf files)
- X lib.h programming sources? the actual manuals are available - check
the (surprise!) vlug.org links page, gtk+ library and google.com
- the Victoria Computer Show 99 is coming up. We're (VLUG) going to be
there with a booth and CDs for sale etc...
- There is going to be a Linux Demo Day (national? international? not
sure). There was discussion of setting up a booth in a mall and showing
off Linux to the general public...
- How to dial in to UVic with Linux - scripts that the questioner have
don't seem to work. CaroLyn suggested they contact the UVic Help Desk
and ask for someone who knows something about Linux or contact Gord
McCague.
- Some hardware questions about special new HDDs and HP710c printers -
there were a flurry of answers and I didn't actually write any down.
- How to upgrade your kernel for old distributions? Check out
kernelnotes.org
- Corel WordPerfect and some discussion around WINE (WINE Is Not an
Emulator) vs. an actual port.
- Someone wanted to know if anyone was actually using VMWare - we are.
Andrew Willard even got his All in Wonder tuner to display TV somehow.
We adjourned for pizza and beer at Boston Pizza.
