Announcements

The meeting started at 7:10 with Mike Thorpe as master of ceremonies. He introduced Matthew Skala, who announced on behalf of the Board of Directors that VLUG's Web server, ladybug, and the websites at www.vlug.org, www.linux.ca, and www.linuxday.org, had been taken offline following a denial of service attack against our system and our ISP's network. We had been asked to find another place for our server; the Board of Directors was looking into new locations for it, and resolving the situation.

Andrew Willard made the usual pitch for CDs and stuffed Tuxen, including the freshly-burnt RedHat 6.0 discs.

Mike announced various news items of interest:

  • Many interesting things can be seen on Slashdot, at http://slashdot.org/.
  • Sony and AOL are working on an application device, apparently some sort of set-top box, based on Linux.
  • Sony has also announced that Linux will be the development platform for the new Playstation.
  • IBM has ported their ViaVoice voice recognition software to Linux
  • The latest issue of IEEE Spectrum has its cover story on open-source systems.
  • Kernel 2.2.8 came out today

CaroLyn Schneider announced that Mike was getting married the following weekend, and he was generally congratulated.

Presentation

Chris Halsall, on X Windowing System configuration.

Break

Further presentation

Chris continued the X presentation, with a demo of GNOME.

Carl Constantine talked briefly about CodeWarrior for Linux, then answered questions about it; MetroWerks had provided several copies of the product, which were raffled to the C programmers in the audience.

Adjourned

At 9:09, for the usual refreshments. The Q&A segment of the meeting was skipped because of the late hour.
