Announcements

Chris Halsall regaled us with various bits of Linux news, including:

  • The SETI-at-home project, another fun thing to do with your spare CPU cycles (although it soaks up a fair bit of RAM, unlike the RC5 client).
  • News story quoting the current Linux growth rate as 25%/year.
  • MetroWerks making their CodeWarrior product available for Linux; we will, of course, be expecting a presentation on that when it's out.
  • Caldera's new distribution, designed to insulate people completely from the command line.

Commercial break with Andrew, who noted that we're down to only RedHat and Mandrake CDs, plus the few remaining Debian 2.0 discs at $5 each. We will, of course, be getting more CDs with the latest new distributions and kernels and such. Also plans underway for a group buy of the new extra-large Tuxen.

Presentation

Tag-team presentation on security, with Mike Thorpe as master of ceremonies, introducing:

Pavel Zaitsev
Choosing a distribution
Deid Reimer
Network services - what to keep, what to turn off

Extra announcements

Gerald queried the group about any interest in a Debian SIG; Chris Halsall passed on a request from the discussion list, for anyone interested in helping with a book reuse project to contact "Peter" at erthfirst@yahoo.ca.

Break

Further presentation

Chris McLean finished the presentation by talking about intrusion detection: how to figure out that you're under attack.

Adjourned

To Boston Pizza for the usual refreshments. The Q&A segment of the meeting was skipped because of the late hour.
