Total recorded attendance:26

Chris Halsall called the meeting to order and announced the agenda.

New business: We have two Red Hat 5.2 boxed sets from RedHat. Chris suggested and after some discussion it was agreed, that we donate one of the sets to the public library and use one for a door prize at the next meeting (December 8).

Discussion of the current StarOffice; it has locked up Chris's and Mike Thorpe's machines twice each. (They're trying really hard to make it a clone of Office...)

Mike Thorpe reported on the current status of the CD-R rumor: apparently the makers of CD-R burning equipment are cutting a deal with the government, to attach the tax to the burners instead of to the media. It is not clear whether this would apply to all burning equipment, or just the consumer audio-style CD duplicating machines. So it sounds like you don't have to stock up now on media, but maybe should buy that burner you were thinking about for Christmas.

More new business: would there be interest in putting together a committee to analyse the Halloween documents and report on them? Answer: yes! Mike, Deid Reimer, Matthew Skala, and Tom McVeigh volunteered to work on this.

Another item: the Freenet wants some documentation on how to use Linux to set up X-terminal style machines for web surfing. Call for volunteers for this.

Presentation: by Deid Reimer, on Professional HomePages (PHP)

BREAK for coffee/etc.

Presentation: by Matthew Skala, on the man command

Discussion: configuring keyboard under X. General thread: it's specific to the applications you're using.

Question: when will the next InstallFest be? Answer: early January

Question: on the feasibility of running programs for other Unices under Linux. Discussion. General consensus: if you have source, it's not a problem. If you don't have source but have a binary for some other Unix on the same hardware platform, you may have some success with emulation libraries but it's iffy.

Discussion: of RT Linux, what realtime means with respect to operating systems, and why it could be useful.

Adjourned for pizza and beer.
