Prior to the meeting start, twenty-seven people signed up for VLUG membership. Membership is still available to those who are interested in being 'full' members. Membership allows people the right to vote, a membership card which will get you great discounts on Monks merchandise, in addition to prestige and great honour, and the right to run for a position on the Board of Directors - there may be future members only benefits/features but that's all for now. Non-members are, of course, still welcome at meetings, InstallFests and other VLUG activities.

General discussion about bylaws, process and membership fees ensued.

Deid hosted a discussion about InstallFest procedure and our hopes/expectations of InstallFest participants. Highlights:

  • need as many people as possible to show up to help do installs, carry stuff, etc on Saturday. Please show up by 9:30!
  • participants /must/ back up any important data
  • participants should bring their entire computer, including manuals, power cords, small bits like modems, keyboards, mice, and any installation disks for any hardware, even if it's for dos
  • People who are willing to volunteer time/talent/stuff should sign up on Mike's Volunter site, vlug.monk.ca
  • Gordon McCague and UVic Computing User Services will be providing all kinds of neat stuff, including CD-ROM drives, NICs, software, the room, connectivity.
  • MacLean will be bringing some kind of server
There was other discussion but as it may be my last stint taking minutes, I was slacking off. Sorry to those who couldn't make it.

Next meeting will be on the fourth Tuesday of October, which is going to be October 27, 1998. Will likely be in the same location at UVic - Cornett B112

Comments welcome as I can't write everything down. Email 'em to CaroLyn Schneider at caro@pinc.com
