Install Fest

  • It went well overall. We sold a bunch of cds and installed a total of six successful machines (Les is still having problems though!) The other machines are apparently still running with few problems.
  • We were short on talent. We need more people who can do basic installations out at the next one (and we know you're out there!)
  • Some discussion at the IF around when the next one will be and I can't remember what was decided. Sometime in August or September I believe..
Polo Shirts
  • Andrew Willard has put in a lot of time looking around for our best deal and we thank him for all of his hard work.
  • What Andrew and the ad hoc shirt committee ultimately decided was best and presented to the group was a teal (blueish green, lovely colour, trust me) polo shirt, short sleeves, good medium weight cotton, with the VLUG logo on the upper left chest (can be seen on the shirt page somewhere on our site). This is going to cost us:

4 - 11 shirts $41.50 (we already have 12 ordered so ignore this one)
    12 - 23 $38.29
    24 - 35 $35.07
    36 - 47 $34.14

  • As you can see, the more of us that order shirts, the cheaper it will become. The shirt quotation is being done by U-Name-It Emblems Ltd in Esquimalt and they have been very cooperative with us so far.
  • There was some discussion around if we wanted polo shirts or t-shirts: Ultimately, we can do both. The idea behind the polo shirts is to present a somewhat professional or cohesive look at the show and/or other events. Andrew plans to also do some (less serious I think) t-shirts later in the year.
  • You can order a stylish VLUG polo shirt on our web site or directly through Andrew.
  • There is a possibility that we may be able to reuse the same logo on ball caps, cowboy hats, socks, etc. for little extra cost - Chris Halsall is looking into it.

VLUG CDs

  • Major flaw in the last batch of cds, which we sold primarily at the install fest. One seems to work, the other six do not and will be replaced - that will be a $24 loss for us. Contact Andrew for more info about exactly what it is that's wrong with the cds. It probably won't happen again.
  • Red Hat is distributing a cd image for folks like us to burn cds with and distribute, but if we were to use this, we'd have to break open the image and add our contribs - easier to just put it together on our own apparently.
  • Version 2.0 should be ready in a few months - for next IF or for the computer show
  • Gord has retail contacts that have expressed interests in selling the cds for us
  • Chris Halsall and Mike Thorpe are looking into other options (pressing) for production of the cds
  • Andrew and Gord are going to be working on developing the next iteration of the cd.

Bylaws

  • there was a meeting where we did further revisions to the bylaws. (changes are posted)
  • Next bit of the process is to get five VLUG people to sign the bylaws (or something? something has to be signed) and submit it to the Registrar of Societies.
  • We did a straw poll of folks at the meeting and most at the meeting decided that $20/year would be a reasonable amount for membership dues. This is not definitive nor is it settled. Just something to think about - membership dues will be voted on at the first AGM when we elect a board of directors and adopt the bylaws and stuff.

Lists

  • Chris MacLean graciously clarified the distinction between vlug-discuss and vlug-announce (read about it on the website)

Victoria Computer Show

  • No longer VIEX - now put on by Dan Dunbar Productions
  • We are going to have a presence at the show. Cost is around $200 (including Hydro). We are going to be in a smaller booth than last year, in a row of User Groups.
  • We would like to invite COW-LUG to provide us with some brochures or promotional material since we suspect they will not have their own booth.
  • Shaw apparently told Steve Baker that not only do we have connectivity but we can do whatever we like with it as long as we put up a sign saying connectivity provided by Shaw - they will provide this and the dimensions of the sign.

Misc.

  • Steve Baker will do some research and try to put together a presentation on Gnome for the next meeting.
  • Chris MacLean has stepped aside as Captain Meeting and Mike Thorpe has offered to fill the position of Sergeant Meeting. All hail Mike.

Next meeting will be on the fourth Tuesday of April, which is going to be May 26, 1998. Will likely be in the same location at UVic.

Comments welcome as I can't write everything down. Email 'em to CaroLyn Schneider
