Bylaws
Next Bylaw planning meeting will be at Cyberstation, Sunday April 5 at 11 am.  This will be to plan out some bylaws and delegate tasks to volunteers.  We need bodies for this - anyone is welcome to show up.

Install Fest Next one will be on April 19th, starting at 10 am, deadline for folks to show up with machines is going to be 11 am.

  • The IF will be at UVic - in Business and Economics building (right beside classroom building) in Room 170 of the Student Computing Facility
  • The Computing Facility will be able to loan out some types of hardware for the duration of the IF such as external cd roms and other needed items
  • Chris Halsall will get Ewan Edwards to design some posters which can be printed on the fabulous new colour printer in the computing facility.
  • Matthew Skala will have a presentation of some sort for folks who show up for some information without a machine to have built.
  • CaroLyn will be signing folks in at the door
  • Steve Baker is coordinating the roaming talent on hardware, kernels, X (Chris Halsall), IP
    Promotion of the IF:
  • Gord will get posters up in the computing facility and in the UVic Computer Store
  • Chris Halsall will try to get an announcement on CFAX
  • CaroLyn will get an announcement on CFUV
  • Gord will try to get some info about it on CBC (radio?... can't remember...)

VLUG CDs

  • Andrew reviewed what the VLUG CDs are and told us that we've sold around 40 or 50
  • Andrew has contacted Red Hat and we are not in trouble - we should no longer use a particular Red Hat image on the liner and some minor changes have to be made to the install program
On the new CD we will have made for the IF:
  • can go retail with it
  • will have a booklet explaining how to get started with the installation, also mentioning the IF, plus Red Hat products and licensing support
  • Andrew is looking for contributions of data for the cd plus cd burning time - contact him at cds@linux.victoria.bc.ca

Education

  • Chris Halsall has been in touch with another user group who has been installing Linux in public schools - saving them money and introducing a nifty OS to the students and staff
  • from this contact, we have learned that it's often prefered to have dedicated hardware for Linux in schools rather than a dual boot setup
  • Within the group, we have contacts/access at a number of Victoria area schools, including Dunsmuir, Central Saanich and Belmont
  • there will shortly be an announcement of a new list to coordinate efforts toward getting Linux into local schools

Brochures

  • CaroLyn will be calling another meeting in April to update local distribution of VLUG brochures

Break

Presentation

Chris MacLean facillitated an informative discussion about what is known about various new connectivity options, specifically ADSL (BC Tel) and Shaw Wave.

Next meeting will be on the fourth Tuesday of April, which is going to be April 28th.  Will likely be in the same location at UVic.

Comments welcome as I can't write everything down. Email 'em to CaroLyn Schneider
