Incorporation of VLUG as a society
Chris Halsall has been gathering information and forms.
There will be a bylaw committee - Volunteers at the meeting
were Les Benson, Mike Thorpe, Matthew Skala, Andrew
Willard (maybe), Chris Halsall, CaroLyn Schneider
Process of becoming a society is roughly
- draw up bylaws, submit to Revenue Canada for
comment of charitable status opinion.
- submit to Registrar for compliance with the
society act.
- if Rev Can refuses status, review desire for
such status. If Registrar rejects, address
concerns and resubmit.
- Find candidates for positions as defined in Bylaws.
- Hold AGM
- Allow members to join at beginning of meeting.
- Members then elect the first year's executive.
- apply with Revenue Canada for charitable organization
status (if we qualify and chose to do so.)
- spread the light.
(nb. Society Act can be seen at:
http://www.qp.gov.bc.ca/stat_reg/statutes/43300.htm)
Membership Fees
discussion around amount
No objection was expressed for amounts of $10 or $15
or so, but a decision was tabled for the bylaws committee
to deal with.
Web Page
status of colo box - it's a P90 with a 1G HDD and it's up
and running.
Website committee met to plan design, layout, responsibilities.
Could use another hand or two.
Should markup and include Gerald's DOS to Linux howto
CDs
Andrew has graciously burned a 3rd run, selling well
No technical problems so far but possible with problematic
standards
etc.
Discussion, no decision on selling through UVic computer store
This run will not be seen in stores - too vague legal
considerations, no boot floppies, few docs.
Anyone with a burner email Andrew or Chris Halsall to volunteer
assistance
It was agreed a group effort should be applied to producing a
professional level CD-ROM image with booklets and better
help docs.
A CD-ROM press run (of 100 or so) (instead of the current CDR
technology) might be feasible in the future (6 months or so.) It
was agreed getting the CDR product to a retail level product
and into supportive computer stores would be an important step
to measuring true, sustainable demand.
Next Install Fest will be April 19th
No location set
Brochures
Gerald is fabulously busy with school, CaroLyn will be taking
brochures under promo stuff
CaroLyn will be calling a brochure/other promotional stuff meeting.
Likely Saturday March 7th, 10am at Cyberstation.
Other promotional stuff being: VIEX, other shows, promotional
discussion
Misc
Cowlug is getting cowlug.bc.ca, should update links, brochures
Someone said (sorry!) on our website and in the brochures we should
concentrate on pointing people to other existing good howtos and
faqs rather than
worrying a great deal about writing our own.
Presentation by Deryk Barker on Emacs
fabulous, thanks Deryk!
Comments welcome as I can't write everything down. Email 'em to CaroLyn Schneider
