 The Job Market for Linux Geeks

  • Linux skills map onto other Unix.
    • SunOS/Solaris, HPUX, AIX -- they're all similar.
    • Main difference is missing or less-functional tools on the commercial versions. E.g. tar -z

  • Most Internet work is done with Linux.
    • Web servers
    • Firewalls
    • Network "appliances"

  • Knowledge is rarely a bad thing.
    • Know what to do when faced with Unix "prompt".
    • Windows and Linux both have their strengths.

  • Linux mandated by governments?
    • The governments of Mexico and France are both encouraging the use of OSS where possible within their own ranks.
    • The US is looking into this, and is supporting many OSS projects.
