Bottom end - x386 intel chip. Top End - IBM Mainframe.

Anything in between can run Linux, but the real question is "What kind 
of hardware does Linux need to perform well when I am doing the tasks I 
need to do on a computer?"

Tell me what you do, and I can probably narrow down what kind of system 
requirements *YOU* have. Someone who does a lot of video rendering has 
different needs from somebody who just wants to surf the web and read 
email.
