[Discuss] problems with Linux Mint 8 install

I've installed Linux Mint 8 and have two problems (so far!):
First, despite the fact that I specifically chose the joint install, I
can't get LM 7 to boot; 8 works fine itself, but can't get 7 up. I need
to get the old files off it to put into 8. (part of the problem may be
that 8 is using Gnome and 7 uses Kde 4.3)
Second problem is that I can't figure out how to get permission to post
programs on the desktop. I just get a flat Permission Denied.Do I have
to go into the binary files and ok each and every program I want on the
desktop, or is there a flat permission granted I can get? Any help on
either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.
