This is getting way off topic (maybe I'll get a degree in philosophy when I
retire), attitudes have changed. I think that what drives Web 2.0
contributes to lack of interest in special interests in Linux, FreeBSD, etc.
Regarding sports, I noticed the same thing in my sport. After taking five
years off from competitive bodybuilding I've noticed there is much less
interest this year than there was five years ago. I think the world has
changed. Rather than point fingers or discuss my philosophy as my thoughts
will just make me appear old, let's just say the world is changing.
I'm thinking of going back to school when I retire. A PhD in Computer
Science on the impact of Web 2.0 on society would be an interesting study.
I listened to a talk by a PhD student from the University of Berlin at UVic
a couple of years ago discussing her upcoming thesis on the effect of
social media on society and how society will change because of it. I think
technology is allowing society to evolve in directions we've never
envisaged before. Frankly I'm not enamoured with the changes.
