Hey Stan,
You can get the ati driver installer to tell you if there are packages for
mepis.  Run

sh ./ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run --listpkg | less

and see if Mepis is in the list.  If it is the run the command again

sh./ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Mepis

or whatever it says in listpkg.  I create Mandriva packages this way.  I run
this command.
sh ./ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Mandriva/2008

I then get 4 or 5 rpms to install.  I would give you better directions, but
I am in WinXP right now shooting bad guys. :)
