Speaking for my household, we have been using Shaw's pipe service since
March of 2000. We have never used any other internet related services
of theirs; our email and websites are hosted with a separate dedicated
hosting company, Baremetal, since 1999.

I don't think my household has ever gotten email from Shaw; all our
contact from them has been by snail mail, and that was just the bills.
So never saw the message in question nor any similar ones.

The current modem we have with Shaw is the exact same box we got from
them when we started using their service (a Teryan). It never had a
standby button and even now that I know some modems do, I don't see the
use of having one in general.

Regarding the comment about someone getting their modem "for free", I
don't think that was the case. AFAIK, if you haven't "bought" your
modem, you are actually paying a rental fee to Shaw, around $4 per month.

Come to think of it, perhaps we should by our modem or a modem to save
on this. Not that buying was feasable when we started on the service
though ... all modems were rented, and to actually buy one would have
probably cost a thousand dollars, or so I recall hearing, perhaps wrongly.

P.S. This is my very first non-test email that I sent following my
switch to Thunderbird (2.0.0.12) from Eudora (6.2.4) after using some
Eudora since we started on the 'net in 1997. The switch involved
migrating around 2000 mailboxes and 300,000 archived messages.
Hopefully it will all work out.
