I have never done this myself, but it's possible to compile the Alsa kernel
module without recompiling the whole kernel. I suspect that is the
preferred method now, but there are some tricky bits with respect to getting
the right version of the kernel headers (which is why in the distant past I
always recompiled the whole kernel in order to get Alsa.) However, if you
followed the Alsa directions on compiling their kernel module, you should be
OK. Much more likely, your problem is with your Alsa configuration. Alsa
has a way to do it (probably what you tried to follow) and Debian (my
preferred distro) has a quite different way to do it because they feel the
Alsa software configuration tool is unreliable. I expect Fedora is the same
in that regard so I suggest you look carefully in the Fedora documentation
for their sound configuration, and try to follow that method.
I don't run Fedora, and its been a (long) while since I compiled Alsa, so
this post is short on specifics, but I hope it gives you some useful food
for thought. Good luck, and let us know what works on Fedora when upgrading
your sound.
