Thanks.  While reinstalling Kubuntu on my wife's computer, and preparing 
to copy all my files back to her home directory, the BIOS gave me a 
warning that one of my Hard Drives was in imminent danger of failing, 
and that I should back it up immediately, which I have now done. 
Unfortunately, it is out of warranty.   In talking to some of the local 
computer stores, they indicated that the BIOS S.M.A.R.T. warning was a 
good indication that the disk was close to failing. I have no idea what 
they measure to determine this! I will look at your link and perhaps try 
some of those tools. Perhaps I would have caught the incipient failure 
sooner than the BIOS or HD firmware.
