Actually, an older version of Open Office from a few years ago used to  
delete the whole file you were working on.  I was doing a work term  
report and it caused me to lose a good portion of work since my last  
backup.  I couldn't switch versions because I was dependent on some  
features of that release of OO.  I ended up writing a shell script to  
make automatic backups to separate files every 10 minutes, I think  
because back then there was not an automatic backup feature yet.

Whatever bug that was has been long fixed, thankfully.
