 From my understanding, people in general don't randomly trash homes. 
They trash homes because there is something of value built into the 
house (copper) -- which implies you are in the wrong neighbourhood and 
should probably move -- or they trash your home because they know you 
and dislike you.

Furthermore, if criminals trash your homes and you have taken reasonable 
precautions to prevent this (locking your doors and windows), the house 
insurance company should cover repair costs.
