Interesting, over here in Vancouver I have had a lot more problems with 
Shaw and Torrents than I have with direct downloading. I also use 
Firefox under Mandriva.

The issue with torrents is that Shaw in certain areas shapes traffic for 
the torrents. It shapes on some sort of fingerprint of torrent traffic 
rather than on a particular port or range of ports. The way around that 
was to use the new breed of Torrent clients (BitTornado here) that 
support encrypting the torrent traffic. The last time I downloaded 
anything (about 1.5 months ago) it moved along at about 200 Bps compared 
to the 4-8 prior to the encryption.
