This series of message is coming in the same thread as the question I
rose yesterday night. I received one reply (thank you Deid) at 06:23
this morning, that said:
"In mine the sound and wireless worked out of the box.
For wireless click on the network icon under the Internet tab and go
from there. I am using WPA-PSK supplied by some no name $15 wireless
router. The EEE PC does not seem to work with my normal home wireless
where I have implemented WPA using EAP and 802.1X (radius)
authentication.
Sound - I Used Music Manager under the Play Icon. It worked after I
told Music Manager where to find the files on a USB stick.
As for your other questions, there has been discussion of most if not
all of them on http://www.eeeuser.com/. Suggest you take a look. It is
a wealth of information.
Deid"
I have started making use of this advice, with still a few questions:
1. When I am travelling abroad, do I need to travel with my own router,
which I would have to clutch into a 100 MBs cable? Or can I hope to
connect with the diffuse wireless fields one finds in airports and
hotels?
2. What is the meaning of WPA-PSK? in plain English?
3. Where could I find the magic no name $15 wireless router?
I am surfing through http://www.eeeuser.com/.....
I still have not succeeded in setting up the sound and am still stuck
with the Wireless connection.. so here is the initial question again,
with the hope that more replies will be forthcoming..:
"I just bought a ASUS EEE and find that it is an attractive little
machine.
However, I have not managed to
* get the sound on
* connect in wireless.
I would appreciate some help from one of the gurus on this list (in the
Victoria area) to resolve these questions and perhaps a few others: such
as
* replacing open office in US version by Open Office in French
with a few dictionaries,
* appropriateness of adding a USB stick with Mandriva 7.0 on the
side
* how we can have grub or lilo installed. to change system.
* appropriateness of adding a 4 GB har disk in the machine
* adding win XP on the 80 GB external HD on which I will put my
(duly pruned) /home and /common folders where I have (perhaps)
useful software package and my data files for use when I travel
Thanks in advance.
And A Happy New Year to all of you.
Yves Bajard"
By the way, I saw two ASUS EEE on the shelves at Tesseract tonight..
Good night
