I stuck a 1GB 150x CF card in a CF->IDE adapter about 2-3 years ago. It
provided OK performance; very consistent. But it lacked eg write
caching, so it was slower in some ways than an ordinary HD.
I imagine modern "proper" SSDs have the write buffer, etc, and thus can
be much faster than the ad-hoc solution we used.
For what it's worth, it did work pretty well, and was fairly speedy even so.
