I asked about this a while ago. Thanks again for all your
answers, and here's another one;
Players from SanDisk, under the brand name Sansa also behave like
simple USB thumb-drives when plugged into a computer. You can
drag, drop, and/or cp -r your audio onto it, and it will build
its own index. It also has a little voice recorder, gets FM
radio, and plays nicely with Linux. Doesn't play FLAC or OGG
Vorbis, but not a lot of them do, yet.
The same people manufacture SD and Micro-SD data storage cards,
so they have a vested interest in selling expansion cards, as
apposed to making sure your MP3s are all bought and paid for,
more than once if necessary, implementing DRM, etc... But without
any add-ons, the built-in 1 GB storage isn't bad.
Still can lock-up at startup, which was a real pain until I
downloaded the manual and figured out how out how to hard-reset
the thing. [Yes, yes, yes, I can hear it now; RTFM. No problem,
I did.]

I think xmms with MADLib on a laptop sounds better [same
headphones, different player, basically], but maybe that's just
me. Ye olde Armada 1700's sound card does seem to have a fuller
range though.
I don't know what's up with that freaky little animated rat/dog
mascot thing that keeps popping up on the screen, but I'm slowly
getting to kind of... like, maybe... it. Still, it ain't Tux.
It's on page 7 of the PDF if anyone's curious [marked Page 4
though; fourth page not counting title page and index].
Patrick.
