One thing you might consider that we have done at Cowlug is to have the
meeting split into two sections. We now try and have a newbie
presentation in the first part then geek session after that. Many
newbies tend to stay for the geek session producing lots of good
questions.
Many people that don't do the newbie stuff tend to come a bit later, it
seems to work well.
Overall the goal of Vlug (my $0.02) should be to promote Linux and get
new users involved. The geeks generally tend to take care of
themselves. It also builds an industry in the area which is good.
Cowlug has standardized on one distribution for newbies, Ubuntu.
Presentations are less hassle and everyone can go home and do what was
in the presentation. Once they are no longer newbies then people start
talking about others distros etc in the geek sessions. We find this
works very well.
With the latest shots at Redhat and Novell, (yes I'm pretty sure it's by
Microsoft) I have a strong desire to move as many off MS products as
possible. The is the mandate of Cowlug.
Cheers
