Yes.  A good place to keep track of the development of the new ATI free
driver for r500 and higher is phoronix.  You will find a number of stories
by looking for radeonhd in the headlines of the September and October
phoronix archives (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news&num=2007&q=09
or http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news&num=2007&q=10).  radeonhd is
still beta, but rapid progress is being made on the 2D front, and the
SuSe-lead development team seems optimistic that 3D development will start
soon.

There is lots of other interesting x.org-related news at phoronix as well.
