Just to clarify, the display manager software (kdm, xdm,...) is running on
the remote computer that is running the desktop (KDE, GNOME, etc.) software,
while the X server is running on the local machine where the
monitor/keyboard/mouse are attached. When you reboot that local computer,
then it should just go into ordinary console mode (since no display manager
should be running on it). You then login to the console, and start the X
server on the local machine with
X -query remote_computer_name
and it should always give you consistent resolution results depending on how
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is configured on the local machine. Anyhow,
that is our experience, and I cannot figure out how you are getting
inconsistent resolutions from one time to the next if you fire up the X
server on the local machine in the above consistent way.
