I have served on the BoD in the past. I haven't been involved in the
group for a few years now, but after seeing on this list the direction
the club is heading, I'm prepared to renew my membership and volunteer
to serve as VLUG President. I'm sad to see the direction the club is
going and believe that I can help turn things around.
I was one of the first proponents of trying to get newbies involved
and I now think this idea could save VLUG. I believe we need to focus
more on helping people who are interested in learning about Linux
rather than just preach to the choir as I've seen happen in the past.
Fern can likely recall the first (and only) newbie meeting I helped
organize that was held at a school in Duncan. If I recall correctly,
there were quite a few participants who showed up and had their
questions answered. Personally, I had more fun at that meeting than
the monthly VLUG meetings because I saw more smiling faces there than
I've ever seen after a general meeting.
I also believe that the general membership needs to feel that they are
welcome to show up at BoD meetings, at least as observers, and
hopefully as participants, any time they like. More often than not it
felt like the BoD really didn't know where to go or how to get there
due to ignorance of how the members felt. There you go people, I want
you to tell us where to go and how to get there! ;-) Please, no long
walks down short piers!
If memory serves, there was a time that VLUG was one of the most
active LUGs in the world, so please, if you want VLUG to continue as a
club, stand up and volunteer as President, Vice President, Membership
Director, Treasurer, or Secretary. Actually, I do believe that the
positions of Treasurer and Secretary are allowed to be combined into
one as Secretary-Treasurer according to VLUG bylaws, so we really only
need four volunteers to keep the club going. I've already volunteered
for one of these positions, so we only need three of you.
I was there when Linus Torvalds and crew took the time to visit with
VLUG and just I can't bear to see this group dissolve. You don't need
to know a whole lot about Linux, you just need to have the desire to
see VLUG continue. What you lack in knowledge, you can more than make
up in enthusiasm. I don't want to name names, so Gordon, Patrick, and
John, you guys are safe. :-P If I was privy to the goings on of the
present BoD I might have other names not to name.
So, if you are behind me, please let me know off list. I would be
proud to help VLUG return to it's former glory.
