    Thanks for the suggestions. For whatever reason 7.04 also came up
black screen, and I wasn't willing to head into my archive of 6.xx
ISO's. And based on my limited knowledge of single user mode, would I be
wrong to assume you must first have actually installed the system? My
problem was that I couldn't get as far as beginning the install process.
The order was ... system echo, Kubuntu splash, system echo, brick.
Sometimes I got as far x booting, but then brick.
