[Discuss] How can you tell which application exercises the disk a lot?

I have not experienced it with the HDD light but I have seen it happen 
at about that frequency with the CD/DVD light. There is a program in KDE 
(can't remember which one) that checks the CD every couple of seconds to 
see if new media has been inserted.

Perhaps the light is actually reporting any SATA/IDE activity and not 
just the HDD.
