Solved that by using
Option "Monitor-VGA-1" "Sony CPD-15SF2"
in the device section.
I used the recommended (by the Intel and xorg.conf man pages)
Option "Monitor-VGA" "Sony CPD-15SF2"
before and that was totally screwing up adding modelines and using the
PreferredMode option to select them. The only clue was xrandr said
that the VGA device was disconnected and the VGA-1 device was connected.
I am sure X configuration with the new RandR 1.2 extension will become
natural and obvious for the experienced Linux community within the year, but
right now all the new options in the xorg.conf file sure feel unnatural!
Anyhow, I now have access to a really good modeline for this monitor (Sony
15-inch CRT which is still going strong after 11 years of hard use), and now
I can move on to the additional install topics I mentioned.
