That sounds like a video driver problem to me. Is your video card recognized? 
Are the drivers installed correctly for it? I have had similar problems when 
using K(Ubuntu) -- I have an Nvidia chipset in the laptop that gave me those 
kinds of problems.

I would take a look in /var/log/Xorg.log to see if you have errors there.
