Hmm, pretty sure aptitude is a replacement for apt-get and apt-cache.
aptitude is for the command line (maybe Alan was thinking of
Synaptic). aptitude logs all the actions so it can effective remove
dependencies that are no longer used by any packages or remove
metapackages.

You can also do interesting searches like:
aptitude search ~c
Which lists removed packages that weren't purged, so their
configuration files are still around.
