I'm going to disagree with that for two reasons:

1) The original poster was not planning on watching HDTV, but rather 
SDTV, so the 1080 vs 720 will make zero difference, but a 1080p set will 
cost significantly more.

2) The visual difference between the two (1080 and 720) is negligable, 
particularly on smaller sets (32" and under).  However, obviously this 
point is subjective.  At any rate though even if you think the 
difference between 1080 and 720 is significant, I certainly don't think 
you believe that it is as significant as the difference between colour 
and B&W (I don't even think the difference between SDTV and 720p HDTV is 
that significant).
