Actually what I think that they give you is a passphase.
I'm also running Ubuntu, with a card that requires a madwifi driver. It
works quite well mostly, I just seem to run into problems with encryption.
Heck, I can't even turn encryption on my access point at home and make it
work. And I know what the hex key is! So what's more likely is that I'm
not doing something correctly. I use the key param with the hex key and
iwconfig shows it so I'd assume that it's correct, but no worky. I'll have
to bash away at it some more.
Trying to turn one of my friends on to Linux, but it get's a bit difficult
when you can't get onto a WEP network and you have the key....

What card are you using? And how did you they give you the WEP key? A
string of 26 hex characters is pretty long to write down correctly.
I'm using ubuntu and have an awful broadcom card and can get WEP to work
fine.
