I thought about doing the "equivalent" using the Window XP CD in Rescue 
mode.  They have two relevant things: FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, both of which 
issue the warning that there was something unusual about the partition 
table and using either of these could result in making all partitions 
not accessible.  However, it might be worth the attempt -- I probably 
have one of those floppies around or if not, my "grandchildren computer" 
has Windows 98 and I think I can make one from there, or perhaps use my 
old Windows 98 CD.  Now that you have reminded me, I seem to remember 
doing this in the past when I had problems.

I am hoping for the day when I can get rid of Windows forever -- it is 
such a tremendous hassle, especially as it steadily deteriorates to the 
point when you pretty well have to start from scratch to reinstall it.
