My first two postings regarding the boot loader problems which led me to try Red Hat (after Mandriva 2007 update destroyed my boot loader, and after Kubuntu failed dismally to create a working boot loader) were asking for assistance in booting into my Mandriva installation.  One of these E-mails eventually got through, after having been returned several times, and as far as I can see, the second one never got through. At the end of this message, I have included the header on the latest of these -- perhaps someone can spot what went wrong with them. 

The essential part of the 2nd post is as follows:

>From Mandriva Rescue, trying to reinstall the LILO boot loader, this is what I get:

lilo failed: Warning '/proc/partitions' does not exist, disk scan bypassed.
Fatal: Bios device code is being used by two disks /dev/hdb(0x0340) and /dev/hda(0x0300).

Then when I quit, I get the error message

Program exited abnormally (return code 1)

-----  When I tried to install LILO during my Kubuntu install, 
it also gave a message like fatal error, return code 1.

When I try to install GRUB (from any route), it says it installs correctly but then it doesn't work.

When I boot, the word "GRUB" appears and the system speaker beeps rapidly.

As I have stated, I was able to get GRUB to install when I installed Red Hat, and I eventually was able to fix the boot loader enough that I could get my Mandriva 2007 working.
