Thank you Ken!
I deliberately did not reply to David's post. What started me on this
whole issue was that I tried to upgrade Mandriva to the latest version,
and in that attempt, my boot loader got destroyed. I had already done
as David had suggested: tried to install Kubuntu, but it was unable to
install its boot loader on either of my hard drives or on the floppy --
it just repeatedly failed. That is when I decided to try Red Hat. At
least its boot loader did install so I could get a working system
going. Finally, with Red Hat I was able to boot into my newly updated
Mandriva, so I am back on familiar territory at least. Since I have
lots of space, I will keep the Red Hat installation around for a while,
at least until I try the special software I have on Mandriva (which is
known to work on Red Hat and SUSE).
For some reason, my original posts on my boot problems (which started
the whole thing off) never got through to the list. I will do a separate
posting on it.
I appreciate all the helpful suggestions which many people had made. If
my original posts had gotten through, I might have gotten the assistance
I wanted with the boot loader, and I could have avoided a lot of
difficulties!
I still plan to seriously try Kubuntu some day. I will also try to
better understand boot loaders to more quickly get around the problems I
had.
