Brilliant detailed post! I hope you put this on the web as well (too
much great stuff gets "lost" on mailing lists).

Although it sounds like a power improvement to the tool stack, it does
not sound like cmake itself will fundamentally effect the essential
elements of the Microsoft monopoly:
1. Desktop applications
(2. development environment)
3. Distribution

I prefer GNOME, but the KDE community does seem to appreciate and gone
farther to be multiple platform. That KDE article you linked does seem
to suggest CMake is an essential part of KDE deployment for MSWin,
allowing MS Visual Studio development of KDE.
