I don't really know Xubuntu, but most distributions allow you to use existing partitions if there are any suitable ones.

It's the main one I use, but never ran into this problem with the
partitioner crashing before [and I had tried partitioning it a
few ways, before settling on a layout that suited me].  So I'm
still not sure what went wrong here.

Glad things worked out for you, anyway.  Maybe not quite the way
you'd planned, but still pretty good.  :-)
