Murray,
I believe what you want to install is the Java Runtime Environment
(JRE). Try installing one of the following:
# From the "multiverse" repository
- sun-java6-jre
# From the "universe" repository
- icedtea-java7-jre
- kaffe
- java-gcj-compat
I personally use the Sun JRE and have had no issues with it. Best of
