There are special purpose distributions made based upon SLAX (Slackware
based) that use a union filesystem with a tmpfs system for writing. The
packages are compressed into squashfs modules and "linked" into the unionfs
at runtime. By writing the tmpfs ,which holds all the filesystem changes, to
a new loadable module you can gain persistant storage. The system is
designed with usbflash drives in mind.
