P.S., David:    After I logged out and logged back in again after adding 
myself to the cdrom group, K3B works fine (without changing the owner or 
permissions of /dev/scd0 or /dev/scd1).

Your response to my original question was the most helpful of all.

(For others: I really don't know why there is no program called 
"K3bSetup" or anything like it in /usr/bin or in the list of available 
or installed packages listed with Adept that others suggested running -- 
perhaps things are done differently with the particular version {1.0} 
installed with Kubuntu 7.04 than what others are using.)

I really appreciate your help.  MS
