Yup (hey, that's news to me):

I assume this ps output means 3?

But trying to change it with init doesn't make any difference.

It seems I'm not allowed to strace pid 1.

Hmm, good point.  I am running RAID mirroring, in case that helps, or 
has something to do with the problem.

Hadn't felt the urge.  It's been satisfying my needs perfectly well... 
until this.  Do you think I should upgrade?  It's not exposed to the 
outside world.
